Announcing think! Interpreting and Virtual Connections

Published: 10 September 2013

InterpretAmerica launches 'think! Interpreting' with GALA and Virtual Connections with Voices for Health.

If we had to pick one word to describe our activities for 2014, it would be "collaboration." It took us the summer to get our ducks in a row, but we can now proudly announce two fantastic initiatives to carry forward our mission to raise the profile of interpreting. One takes us halfway around the world to Istanbul, the other let's us reach the entire globe over the Internet.

think! Interpreting

InterpretAmerica is pleased to partner with the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) to produce think! Interpreting. This innovative collaboration will run concurrently with GALA's 2014 annual conference, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from March 23 to 26, 2014. For those of you unfamiliar with GALA, it is the largest international association of language service companies. Because translation is a much larger share of the language services market, GALA members have traditionally tended to focus on the translation and localization side of language services. However, mobile technologies are wiping out the remaining barriers to global communication, increasing demand for interpreting and hybrid translation/interpreting services.

InterpretAmerica and GALA recognize the need for much closer contact and interaction between the interpreting and translation segments of our industry. Hence think! Interpreting, a dynamic and exciting new collaboration which will give conference participants a chance to explore the rapidly expanding interpreting sector in all its many facets. It will also offer representatives of interpreting the opportunity to network with create connections with the broader translation and localization side of our profession. Follow the think! Interpreting section of the GALA 2014 website for up-to-date program information. A press release regarding this groundbreaking collaboration can be found here.

Virtual Connections in 2014

With the help of Voices for Health, we broke new ground at InterpretAmerica 4 in the United States in 2013.  Our live webstream of the second day of the 4th InterpretAmerica Summit allowed participants to "attend" a Summit virtually from anywhere in the world. Videos of the InterpretED talks from this year's Summit are available now on our website. More videos will be posted in the coming weeks.

In 2014 we will be continuing our collaboration with Voices for Heatlh to bring you presentations and other interactive events virtually. If think! Interpreting allows us to highlight and elevate the place of interpreting on the business side of language services, virtual presentations will help us continue the conversations begun between interpreters, vendors and other stakeholders at the annual InterpetAmerica Summits. Check back often for updated information for planned events.

InterpretAmerica 5, Summer 2015

"But what about the the InterpretAmerica Summit?" you ask. No worries, we've got you covered there as well. We are resting the onsite Summit during 2014, while we develop our virtual platform, but we'll be back stronger than ever in 2015. The 5th InterpretAmerica Summit is planned for Summer 2015 in California. The Summits have rapidly become the go-to place for individual interpreters, technology vendors, educators, and other stakeholders from across the field to meet, network, and continue to strengthen our profession's infrastructure. Nothing can beat a face-to-face gathering where key players can meet and form connections and future collaborations.

At InterpretAmerica, our mission to raise the profile of interpreting, both inside and outside the profession. Our efforts on the enterprise side with think! Interpreting, as well as our Virtual Connections program, allow us to do just that. As always, we work for the day when "I am an interpreter" is as universally understood as "I am a teacher" or "I am a doctor."

Whether in person in Istanbul or online from wherever you may be, we look forward to "seeing" you in 2014!
